AdmissionsThe admissions score for Westinghouse's first Selective Enrollment freshman class (2009-2010) was 861. This past year (2010-2011), a 900 point scale was used and the average score for an admitted student was 754. Unlike most Selective Enrollment High Schools, Westinghouse does accept a limited number of transfer students as upperclassmen. ProgramsWestinghouse opened in 2009-2010 in a new $106.5 million facility housing under one roof both a Selective Enrollment and Vocational high school. There will be separate admissions policies for each of these schools with Selective Enrollment students chosen under the same admissions policy that is used for the other eight Selective Enrollment high schools. Westinghouse students can choose advanced placement options (e.g., in English, Math, Science, Social Science, Art, and Foreign Language), an accelerated math program, and will be offered 4 years of either Spanish or Chinese. Activities/Clubs/SportsWestinghouse plans to offer Academic Clubs including an Academic Decathlon, Creative Writing, Debate, Math and Science Club, and Yearbook. The "old" Westinghouse is well known for its strong basketball heritage. AcademicsAs a new school, Westinghouse lacks academic data such as ACT scores for its upperclassmen. However, the first class did complete the EXPLORE test which is sometimes used as an early indicator of subsequent ACT performance. Scores on the EXPLORE range from 1 to 25. Westinghouse 9th graders scored 15.5 (50%) composite score on the EXPLORE test. This compares to the average CPS score of 13.7 (35%). |
The SelectivePrep program is twice as difficult as the actual test -- which is good. This really gets students prepared. |
